I spent time on the floor at Automate 2026 at McCormick Place last month, the automation show the A3 runs, which this year drew past fifty thousand people and more than a thousand exhibitors across the halls. I went as a quality engineer, not a robotics buyer, and that lens changes what stands out. Here is what I took away, with the usual caution that a show floor is where technology looks its best and a production floor is where it has to actually work.
machine vision has quietly grown up
The most relevant story for quality was not the humanoid robots that drew the crowds. It was machine vision. Inspection systems that a few years ago needed heavy setup and good lighting now handle presence, orientation, color, and dimensional checks at line speed, and several were catching defects that would challenge a rested human inspector, let alone a tired one at hour seven. If you ask me, for many plants, vision-based in-line inspection is now the highest return automation available, not because it is the most impressive, but because it moves inspection from a sampling activity after the fact to a full check at the station that made the part.
the gap between demo and production
A show floor is a controlled environment. Every demo runs on clean parts, known lighting, and a curated set of failure modes. In my experience that is exactly where the quality engineer earns their keep, by asking the questions the demo is designed to skip. What is the false reject rate on parts that are in spec but cosmetically varied. How was the model trained, and on how many real defect images. What happens when a new defect appears that the system has never seen. A vision system is a gauge, and it deserves the same scrutiny as any gauge, including a measurement system analysis, before it is trusted to accept and reject product.
humanoids and the workforce question
The humanoid robots were the headline, and there was a co-located forum devoted to them. I will be honest about my read here. For repetitive, well defined quality tasks, the near-term value is in fixed automation and vision, not in humanoids, which remain early for most manufacturing work. The more useful signal underneath the hype was the workforce theme running through the whole show. Much of the automation on display was aimed at the shortage of skilled people, and quality is feeling that shortage as sharply as production. That is worth planning around now.
a number worth sitting with
One data point framed the whole event for me. According to the A3, North American companies ordered just over nine thousand robots in the first quarter of 2026, with order revenue down from the prior year and automotive orders off sharply. My reading is that the adoption story is real but uneven. Automation spending is not a straight line up, and the plants getting value are the ones deploying it against a specific, well understood problem rather than buying capacity and hoping for a use.
what it confirmed
The show reinforced something I already believed, so I hold it lightly for that reason, but the floor did not change my mind. The bottleneck in getting value from automation is rarely the robot. It is the process the robot is bolted onto. Automating a capable, stable process multiplies a good thing. Automating an unstable one just produces defects faster and with more capital at risk. Every impressive demo I watched assumed a process that was already in control.
where this is heading
The thing I kept turning over on the drive home: the line between an automation show and a quality show is fading. Vision, sensors, and AI are becoming quality tools as much as productivity tools, and the quality function should be in the room when automation is specified, not brought in afterward to inspect what it produces. If your plant is planning capital for automation in the next cycle, put a quality engineer on the selection team. The cost of that is a seat at a few meetings. The cost of skipping it is discovering the capability and measurement gaps after the equipment is installed.
